The Power Of Faith And Hearing the Word of God
Romans 10:17 says, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” This powerful scripture underscores the importance of constantly immersing ourselves in God’s word, enabling us to cultivate a faith that is unwavering and steadfast.
The Bible is riddled with countless examples of individuals whose faith in God was ignited and fortified through the hearing of His word.
Consider Abraham, referred to as the father of faith in Romans 4. The promise of becoming a great nation was given to Abraham, despite his old age and barren wife. It was God’s word to him that sparked and sustained his faith. God’s promise, however audacious it may have sounded to the physical ear, resonated in Abraham’s spirit. In faith, he believed and became the father of many nations, just as God had said (Genesis 17:4-5).
Next, we journey to Jericho’s fall in Joshua 6. Joshua and the children of Israel were faced with an impenetrable city. However, they received a unique battle strategy from God. They were told to march around the city walls for seven days, and on the seventh day, to blow their trumpets and shout. It may not have made sense to the natural mind, but they heard the word of the Lord and acted in faith. Their obedience led to the mighty walls of Jericho falling down, giving them victory.
Furthermore, let’s take a glance at Peter, one of Jesus’ closest disciples. In Matthew 14:28-29, upon seeing Jesus walking on water, Peter requested, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” Jesus responded with one word, “Come.” Peter heard, believed, and stepped out in faith, embarking on a miraculous walk on water. Though he momentarily faltered, this instance demonstrates the power that hearing the word of God has to embolden our faith.
Beloved readers, we learn from these examples that hearing is not just a physical act; it’s an active, spiritual engagement. It involves accepting God’s word as the ultimate truth, holding onto His promises, and trusting Him even when the circumstances appear bleak. It’s not merely hearing with our ears, but hearing with our hearts, allowing His word to take root and grow.
In today’s world, we have an abundance of opportunities to hear the Word of God. From church sermons, Bible study groups, Christian podcasts, to personal Bible reading, there are various avenues to keep our ears tuned to God’s word. Let us make the most of these opportunities, letting His word illuminate our paths and fortify our faith.
Remember, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ (Romans 10:17). Therefore, let us immerse ourselves in His word, absorbing it, meditating on it, and allowing it to transform us from the inside out. As we continually hear and apply His word, we will see our faith grow, influencing every aspect of our lives, shaping our thoughts, decisions, and actions.
May the God of all grace enrich your spirit as you tune in to hear His word.
